What is the Difference Between a Walkie Talkie and a Two Way Radio?

Walkie Talkie

Although the two way radio and the walkie talkie may appear to be the same device, in reality they have very different histories. They have basically the same functionality, but with some very subtle differences. The walkie talkie was originally developed as a portable military communication system during World War II. After the war, the technology spread to the common consumer. A walkie talkie is somewhat lighter than a two way radio and built for the more casual user. Walkie talkies have even been adapted for use as children’s toys. Two way radios tend to be more rugged and sophisticated and are typically used for commercial communication, such as between service people and their home base, or office. Although the walkie talkie and two way radios are very similar, it’s mainly the quality of construction that differentiates the two.
